Client Quote:

“David's zen shiatsu therapy has given me the mental and physical strength to leave behind anti-depressant medication and the self-destructive behaviour even that medication did not prevent.

“Regular treatments have restored my resilience and sense of well-being.

“Most remarkably, two daily sessions managed to actually lift me from a depression, something I wouldn't have thought possible beforehand.”

Zen Shiatsu is a type of bodywork from Japan based on the ancient model of traditional Eastern medicine.

Shiatsu works on a much deeper level than conventional massage. As your therapist, I work directly with your body's energetic channels, or “meridians”, to bring this natural life energy into balance.

This promotes deep relaxation, improved vitality and healing.

Because of the techniques involved, shiatsu is performed on the floor, using traditional Japanese tatami mats and an all-cotton futon.

Touch ranges from gentle to powerful – always within your range of comfort. No oils or powders are used.

As well as being an effective treatment for general relaxation and well-being, zen shiatsu can help with:

  • Headaches
  • Lower back pain and other chronic pain
  • Tiredness, tension and stress
  • Insomnia
  • Depression and emotional problems
  • Poor digestion
  • Women's and men's reproductive health

Your treatment, or series of treatments, will be designed to treat the underlying cause of your condition, as well as relieve your symptoms.

Zen shiatsu treats the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

What happens in a treatment?
At your first appointment we'll talk a bit about your medical history. This is the case even if you are coming simply for general relaxation and well-being. Our discussion will help me treat you comfortably and effectively.

If you are coming for treatment for a specific condition, I will ask you lots of questions to help me understand your problem better.

Some of these questions – for example, about sleep patterns, emotions and diet – may seem curious or even unrelated to your problem. But, surprising as it may seem, these questions help me to see underlying patterns that will help both of us in your treatment.

Once we've had a chat, I will have an idea of how to work with you that day. Although I keep your long-term progress in mind, no two treatments are ever exactly alike.

Your treatment will include pressure of varied depth and strength along the meridians (energy lines) of the body, as well as invigorating stretches and elements similar to deep tissue work.

You will finish your treatment balanced, deeply relaxed, and refreshed. Conditions such as back pain and neck pain, as well as stress, are often noticeably improved,
even after a single treatment.

Eat lightly about two hours before the treatment. The ideal is “not hungry, not full”.

Please bring loose, comfortable clothing to wear for your treatment. Gym shorts or yoga pants and T-shirt make a good choice. Tight jeans and other “street clothes” can hinder your movement and make the treatment less than optimal.

If possible, don't wear scented products such as colognes or after-shaves – this can interfere with both diagnosis and treatment.

My treatment space is a cell-phone-free zone! Please take an hour or so out of your busy life to focus totally on you.

Afterwards, feel free to ask questions about your treatment. Once at home, make time to rest and relax.

I've been practicing the science and art of healing bodywork since 1985, when I first studied at the Reade School of Massage in London, England. I then trained at the British School of Shiatsu, the first major shiatsu school in that country, where I studied shiatsu and macrobiotics with Ray Ridolfi.

In Toronto, I am a graduate of the rigorous Kokoro Do Jo 1100-hour training program in zen shiatsu and traditional Eastern medicine.

My success stories include helping patients with chronic pain from fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis; as well as patients with insomnia, anxiety and stress, and depression.

I am licensed as a Holistic Practitioner by the City of Toronto.
